Occupations

If we could enter into detail about each member of the family who comprises our family tree, we would find, next to the people who knew how to do their daily work in a constant, anonymous way, people who have stood out in poetry, history, the arts, business, industry, politics, the Church. Peasants, artisans, tradespeople, people with a career, intellectuals, and businessmen. Carlists and Liberals, of the Right and the Left. People in teaching and also involved in young people’s movements. Although there have been few, we have had the odd priest and soldier among our own, people who fought in the Philippines and even a “mambí”1 who fought against Spanish rule in Cuba.

1 In Cuba the word “mambí” is used exclusively to refer to those patriotic soldiers who fought against Spain in the War of Independence, 1895-1898.
